Aiming vs Alignment

Aiming continues to be one of the most common things readers bring up when they talk about struggles in their game. Many say that they feel like they hit the shot cleanly, but the ball doesn’t drop. That usually points to a breakdown in alignment.

When your eyes, stance, and cue aren’t all working together, even a good stroke can send the cue ball slightly off line. These small adjustments add up, especially on longer shots or thinner cuts.

Stance is a big part of correcting this. A stable, balanced setup gives you a reliable base and helps your stroke stay on line. If your body is out of position or your cue isn’t aligned properly from the start, the outcome becomes unpredictable. Aiming well is important, but it has to be supported by the way you stand and deliver the shot.

Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Step into the shot the same way each time to build consistency

  • Your stance should feel balanced, stable, and allow for a straight follow-through

  • Check your grip pressure—too tight can lead to rotating the cue stick and steering the shot off line

  • Keep your bridge hand firm and steady to support a straight stroke

  • Avoid adjusting your aim after you're down on the shot—stand back up and reset if unsure

  • Practice straight-in shots regularly to reinforce pure stroke and alignment

  • Film yourself from the front and side to check for unseen alignment issues

This week’s video comes from Dr. Dave and focuses on practical drills for improving your alignment and aim. These are simple, clear drills that make it easier to identify where your setup might be breaking down and how to fix it. Watch it and subscribe to his channel for more helpful content.

🧠 Mindset Mastery

With all due respect

A lot of mistakes in pool don’t come from bad mechanics or poor decisions. They come from rushing, assuming, or not giving a shot your full attention. It’s easy to focus hard on a tough cut or a tricky bank, then coast through the next easy shot without thinking. It is why you often hear players talk about making the hard shots then missing the easy ones.

The truth is, every shot deserves the same level of respect. Whether it’s a straight-in tap or a tough position play, each one has the power to change the outcome of the game. The moment you treat a shot like it’s “routine” or “too easy” is the moment your focus drops.

Respecting each shot doesn’t mean overthinking. It just means staying present. Take the time to go through your process. Get down with purpose. Commit to the line. Follow through. That level of care adds up over time and builds trust in your own game.

Here are a few habits that help reinforce this mindset:

  • Take a full pre-shot routine, even on simple shots

  • Don’t rush to get the rack over with—finish it like you started it

  • Reset your stance and stroke if anything feels off

  • Stay mindful of your cue ball path, even on shots you’ve made a hundred times

When you start treating every shot with equal focus, you’ll miss less, play more consistently, and feel more in control—even under pressure. The game rewards players who stay present. One shot at a time. Every time.
