đ± The Reason You Miss Easy Shots
The hidden key to aiming, the real rewards of pool, & bank shot varieties
Welcome back to Stroke of Confidence. This weekâs edition features what may be one of the most basic but important tips we have shared. If youâve ever missed an easy shot and had no idea why, this oneâs for you.
This weekâs topics:
Aiming and the throw effect
Poolâs lasting rewards
The versatility of bank shots
Letâs dive in:

ICA Training System - Your key to confidence and consistency
The ICA Training System is hands down one of the best tools weâve seen for players who want to train with purpose, increase their confidence at the table, and develop consistency in their game.
This thing turns your pool table into a guided training tool. Setup is quick: just mount a projector, run a one-time calibration, and youâre ready to roll. It projects drills directly onto the felt so you can stop guessing and start improving. Whether you want to master cue ball control, sharpen your safeties, dial in your banks and kicks, or just feel more confident aimingâitâs all right there.
We love tools that make pool more fun and training more effective. If youâre ready to give it a try, click the photo below to learn more.

Feeling aimless?

Two of our most frequent questions we get are about how to aim and how to stop missing easy shots.
Letâs start with aim and using the ghost ball technique. It involves visualizing where the cue ball should be at the moment of perfect contact. Picture an imaginary ball frozen behind the object ball and in line with the pocket youâre aiming for. Thatâs your target. Your job is to send your cue ball to that ghost ball position. When done right, the object ball should go straight in the pocket. But sometimes it doesnâtâŠ
If youâre aiming with the ghost ball method and still missing, there's a good chance youâre getting beat by throw. Throw is a sneaky force that can push your object ball just enough to miss. It shows up more than people realize, especially when spin and soft speeds are involved.
Here are a few tips to help apply this to your game:
Understand what throw actually is: When the cue ball hits the object ball at an angle, friction between the two causes the object ball to veer slightly off its intended line. That veer is called throw.
Know that spin affects throw: Using side spin increases throw. Right spin will throw the object ball left. Left spin will throw it right.
Speed matters: Softer shots throw more while firmer shots will reduce throw.
Watch the object ball closely: Pay attention to which direction it misses when you're slightly off. That tells you what kind of throw is happening.
Align your eyes early: Make sure you find the ghost ball line while standing up, not once youâre already down in your stance.
Use a tool to improve accuracy: Products such as the DeadEye Trainer can help dial in your aim and help you figure out why you are missing.
Getting consistent with your aim isnât just about mechanics. Itâs about understanding how the cue ball and object ball interact. This weekâs video from the Pool School channel on Youtube gives a super clear breakdown of the ghost ball aiming system and shows exactly how throw can change your results.

My racks of choice: Outsville Accu-Rack Template Set
Racking shouldnât be a guessing game. The Outsville Accu-Rack Templates help you rack fast, tight, and fair every time. No more tapping balls or eyeballing gaps. This thing lays flat, lines up clean, and gives you the kind of consistency youâd expect at a pro event.
Why I like it:
Super consistent â The tight rack means better breaks, fewer clusters, and cleaner runouts. If you donât have to worry about how well the balls are racked, you can focus more on your break technique and strategy.
Support for all games â This set comes with racks for 8, 9, and 10-Ball along with a rack for 3-Ball Speed Pool and table savers that can help you break or jump without marking up your table.
Tournament-grade results â Used at major events like the US Open. If itâs good enough for the pros, itâs good enough for me.
Downsides:
Not always portable â These are super light and easy to carry, but you do not want to bend them. This often requires a folder of some kind if you want to take it to league night.
Not magic â It will give you a tight rack every time, but it wonât fix a sloppy stroke or poor cue ball control. Good breaking technique and knowledge is still needed.
If you're serious about improving your break spreads or just want to practice with pro-level consistency, this rack template is a great tool to have on hand. Grab yours here:

The real rewards

In the book Inner Tennis - Playing the Game, the author Timothy Gallwey breaks down the difference between outer rewards and inner ones. Outer rewards are things like trophies, money, and recognition. They happen after the match. But if thatâs your only reason for playing, youâre missing the better rewards. Inner rewards happen while youâre still playing. And they matter more.
Hereâs what youâre really playing for:
Enjoyment: The actual fun of the game. Key word: game. If you forget to enjoy it, whatâs the point of playing?
Improving your skills: Every match, every rack, every shot gives you a chance to get better. That progress stacks up. Winning or losing doesnât change it. Improvement is yours to keep.
Developing concentration: Pool demands full focus. You train your mind to block out noise, distractions, and doubt. That kind of focus carries over into everything else you do.
Staying calm under pressure: You learn to breathe. To reset. To take a tough shot with steady hands. That calm doesnât just help your game. It builds real life composure.
Building confidence: The kind that comes from doing hard things on purpose. From testing yourself and seeing yourself grow. From knowing you can show up and handle whatever comes.
Learning self-awareness: The table shows you who you are when things donât go your way. You notice your habits. Your reactions. Your mindset under stress. That awareness leads to growth.
Staying present: Pool gives you a reason to stay locked into the moment. It pulls you out of your head and into the now.
Recognition fades. Wins come and go. But the habits you sharpen, the mindset you strengthen, and the belief you build under pressureâthose are yours for life.

Money in the bank
Not all bank shots are created equal. Jump banks, two-way banks, multi-rail banks, and positional banks all serve different purposes. Sometimes itâs about offense. Sometimes itâs about strategy and control. And sometimes itâs just the smartest path to the win.
This weekâs video from Dr. Dave is a quick highlight reel showing off just how many ways a bank shot can show up in a game. Itâs a mix of talent, creativity, and smart problem-solving from the pros. Watch it and start seeing banks as more than just a way to make a ball.
