You Ask, I Answer

Every month I pull a few of your best questions from emails, comments, and DMs — here’s this month’s lineup:

❓️ Q: I play better against better players, but it’s really hard to get in the zone against weaker players. Why is that? - Roy

💬 A: Great question, and something a lot of players deal with.

If you find yourself playing better against strong opponents and struggling against weaker ones, it's usually a focus issue. When you're up against someone who shoots well, your brain locks in. You stay alert, you follow your routine, and you take each shot seriously. There's an unspoken pressure to perform, and that pressure actually helps you stay engaged.

But when you face a player who seems less skilled, it's easy to slip into cruise control. You might rush your process, get casual with shot selection, or start taking things for granted. It's not about effort. It's about mental engagement. Without that internal sense of urgency, your attention drifts and your execution suffers.

The key is learning how to bring the same level of focus and respect to every match, no matter who you’re playing. It’s not about the opponent. It’s about your standards. When you hold yourself to the same level each time you step to the table, your game gets more consistent, your confidence grows, and you stop riding the wave of your opponent’s level.

❓️ Q: I don’t have a sturdy, comfortable bridge. How can I fix that? - Kerry

💬 A: A solid bridge hand is one of the quiet keys to consistency in your stroke. Without it, even a good aim and smooth follow-through can fall apart. The bridge gives your cue a stable foundation, keeps your aim and tip position steady, and controls the path of the cue from start to finish. If your bridge is loose or inconsistent, it can wreck your shot accuracy and cue ball control.

The good news is that it’s a skill you can clean up with a little focus and practice. This video below walks you through everything: how to build a proper open or closed bridge on both the cloth and off the rail, and what to avoid. If you’ve never taken a hard look at your bridge, now’s a good time to tighten it up.

Did that just happen!?

Pool has a way of surprising you. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, something happens that feels impossible — a wild kick, a one-in-a-million combo, or a shot that somehow finds the pocket through a maze of traffic. These moments are rare, but they remind us why we keep showing up to the table. The video below captures some of those unbelievable shots, and it’s a good reminder that in pool, anything can happen.
